I dragged myself out of bed, and threw together some clothes that still smelled clean (or as close to clean as things can smell) and rushed with Tristan over to the Eccles to see Steve Buscemi's film LONESOME JIM, with Casey Affleck and Liv Tyler in it. It was a great, if slightly melancholy, film, and they had a great q&a afterwards. It turns out that the film was shot entirely on a mini DV camera, just incredible. Soon everyone can afford to make a movie.
Some of our gang headed out to actually (gasp) ski for the rest of the day, and the rest of us wandered Main Street and picked up free swag. I signed up for some drawing at the Volkswagen booth, and I actually later (when I was back in Los Angeles) got a call...I won a Lomo camera! Go figure, I never win anything. My friend Gar picked it up for me and brought it back safe and sound.
We went back to the Eccles for a 12pm showing of JUNEBUG, which was a cute little film. Amy Adams totally steals the show and just makes you feel durn good.
After Junebug, I said most of my goodbyes and headed back to the house to pack up my bags. How is it that on any trip, I end up spreading my junk out everywhere? It took awhile to track everything down and load up. Gar (this guy needs a medal) was nice enough to drive me to Salt Lake City where I was going to go see MIRRORMASK at 6:45pm. If you ever meet him, get him to tell you his Nintendo States of America Theme Song story, it's hilarious.
In Salt Lake City I met up with Nicole Goldman (thanks Nicole!) and some other folks I used to work with at the Jim Henson Company, including Lisa Henson, Mike Polis, and of course Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean. One of the last projects I worked on there before going to Sydney was MirrorMask, which I did extensive notes on. It was so great to see it finally come together on the big screen. The film is visually stunning, and has a great story. It's refreshing to see fantasy films that are so creative.
After the film I drove back into Park City with my friends Olga and Sarah, and we bar-hopped and street-walked and people-watched for awhile, and then headed back to SLC and a couch they provided for me for the night, as my flight was leaving at 7am the next morning. I was asleep before my head hit the pillow.
FLASH FORWARD to me being shaken awake. Panic mode. Olga and Sarah forgot to set their clocks ahead an hour to Utah time, so we're late. Very late. Someone I slam my things into my bag and we jet to the car in 30 seconds. Sarah literally flies through traffic, we rush to the airport, run to the check-in desk, they priority check my bags, I yell goodbye, I RUN to the departure gate, am the last person on board, and then the plane gets delayed for an hour due to some technical glitch. Wouldn't you know it?
Anyhow, at long last the flight departs, and I leave for Los Angeles, and back to the rat race. I had a great time, saw some great movies, and made some great friends. What more could you ask for?
